Quality education has become a popular paradigm of higher education
scenario in the country. Institutes of higher learning are expected
to promote quality consciousness amongst their faculty members. Particularly,
Physics as a science discipline is passing through a crucial period
world over. Enrolment to physics major courses is facing a decline.
Experts in the field feel that one of the reasons for this decline
is the methods of physics instruction carried out in the Universities.
Many physics departments in these universities have setup physics
education groups to understand problems related to the fields. In
Indian context, however there is no such concerted effort on cards.
Through the proposed seminar on 'Research areas in physical education'
at Sathaye College we want to initiate a dialogue in this matter.
Objectives • To appreciate the need for research in Physics
education. • To acquaint the participants about research
areas in Physics education. • To know about specific Physics
education research projects. • To provide a forum to those
who have made attempts or have ideas of research in the field.
• To generate specific ideas of and create an atmosphere for
Physics education research.
Science and technology have become increasingly important for the
country. Physics is a major basic discipline in science. Its understanding
plays a unique role not only on political sciences, in technology
and engineering, but also in biological sciences. Physics education
is therefore a singularly important endeavour for the country.
Thus a sound basis must be provided for curriculum changes, instruction,
student assessment, laboratory development and other aspects of the
subject. Research in Physics education has therefore been recognized
in the world as a major input in this regard. Specifically, the following
areas call for intensive research in this field: • Curriculum
changes: what, how and whom to teach? • Instruction: Helping
teachers in the context of changing demands of the community, student
profile, nature of the subject, new developments of the subject.
• Assessment of students. • Evaluation of programmes,
text books, materials, etc. • Laboratory development.
• Understanding how students learn, their difficulties, misconceptions.
The college environment is perhaps the most suitable laboratory for
physics education research.
Action research, projects can be easily undertaken by college teachers,
with its concomitant benefit for students, for teachers and their
institutions. It will invigorate the institutional academic atmosphere.
We feel such a gathering of physics teachers in the region will help
boost the process of academic exchange.
